How I Design Gel Nail Strips

Behind every Lit Gels design is a story. Some come from color trends, some from fashion, and others from meaningful moments in life.

One of the most personal designs I’ve ever created started with a small object that has been sitting on my shelf for years — a traditional Korean mother-of-pearl jewelry box.

A Piece of Korean Craftsmanship

When I got married, I received a beautiful keepsake box made with traditional Korean mother-of-pearl inlay, known as najeonchilgi. These pieces are crafted by embedding thin slices of shimmering shell into lacquered wood, creating intricate patterns that reflect light from different angles.

The first time I saw it, I remember thinking how mesmerizing the colors were. Depending on the light, the shell would shift between soft pinks, silvers, greens, and blues.

It wasn’t just decorative — it felt timeless.

Turning Inspiration Into a Nail Design

As a nail strip designer, I’m constantly looking for textures and finishes that feel unique yet wearable. The way the mother-of-pearl reflected light reminded me of the kind of multidimensional effect that looks stunning on nails.

That idea eventually turned into the Keepsake design.

Instead of copying the box directly, I focused on the feeling it created:

• soft iridescent tones

• elegant, timeless beauty

The result was a design that feels delicate but still eye-catching — something that works both for everyday wear and special occasions.

For me, Keepsake represents more than just a beautiful pattern. It’s a reminder of a special moment in my life and of the incredible artistry found in traditional Korean crafts.
